44 Magnum Anaconda - It reintroduced the Colt Anaconda in .44 Rem. magazine. "Snake Gun" is a worthy addition to the lineup. yamil sood
Colt revolvers hold a very special place in my heart. I grew up shooting my father's 1969 Colt Cobra, which he kept until he passed away, and I inherited it. It was a tangible symbol of craftsmanship and reliability. I was excited when Colt started producing revolvers again in 2017, and have fired every model they've ever produced. Earlier this year Colt reintroduced one of my favorite Anacondas.
44 Magnum Anaconda
In the early '90s, I had a lot of good .44 Magnum revolvers, so I ordered an Anaconda 6-inch in .45 Colt. It quickly became one of my favorite large frame revolvers. It was heavy, reliable and, of course, accurate. It was certain that when Colt released the new Anaconda he was going to get one.
Colt Anaconda Revolver 44 Magnum
The new Anaconda looks very similar to its predecessor, but it has some significant improvements. The 2021 Anaconda has been manufactured using new materials and processes since Colt stopped producing revolvers nearly three decades ago, thanks to advances in manufacturing techniques and metallurgy.
The new model is currently only available in the powerful .44 Magnum, which also allows for the use of less powerful .44 Specialty ammunition. It comes in two barrel lengths, 6-inch and 8-inch, both of which have a bright stainless steel finish. I opted for the 6-inch version, which for me points more fluidly and naturally than the 8-inch version.
Some of the new features introduced with Colt's new generation of Snake revolvers include user-replaceable front sights, a thicker top strap that is drilled and threaded for mounting a scope rail, and new adjustable rear sights. The Anaconda also features Hogue rubber grips, which help with recoil. Although Colt added these features to the new Anaconda, it retains its original shape, so holsters are readily available and because the grip contour is the same, many vendors have aftermarket options available.
My first impressions of the new Anaconda were very positive. Fit and finish were excellent. For example, the way the crane locks into the frame is incredibly precise and tight. And when it locks up, it looks like that part of the revolver is made of one piece of steel instead of two. The fit is perfect.
This Old Gun: Colt Anaconda
The single action trigger weighs about 5 pounds and is very sharp. The double action trigger was also smooth and grit free. The Hogue grip fit my hand very well and allowed me to handle and manipulate the trigger, hammer, and cylinder latch with ease.
The Hogue grips that come standard on the new Colt Anaconda do a good job of reducing the recoil felt with full .44 Magnum loads. yamil sood
My first field trip with the new Anaconda was just a test run. He wanted to see how the new revolver performed in single and double action. Due to the current ammunition situation, I took some of my personal loads to the shooting range; some of the lighter rounds propelled a 240-grain shell to 900 fps. That loadout is easy to handle and fun to shoot. I put the new Viper in its stride, firing 100+ rounds at the MGM Steel Silhouette at 10 to 15 yards in both single and double action.
Shooting handheld at these distances was a blast, no pun intended. With these lighter loads, the Anaconda was perfect, stacking the rounds on top of each other. Even though these "soft" charges were nice to shoot, they had enough energy to knock the target down. I had to place a large rock at the base of the lens mount to keep it straight.

What I don't care for on the Anaconda is the jagged texture on the trigger face. It is unnecessarily sharp and a soft trigger will feel and work better.
Now for the accuracy test. I know this revolver is capable of great accuracy at longer ranges, but due to time and distance limitations, I shot indoors at about 20 yards. I used a Ransom International Multi-Cal Stationary Mount, a machined aluminum fully adjustable mount that is capable of providing a super strong shooting platform. The ammo I chose for this test was Federal Premium's 240-grain Hydra-Shock JHP ammo. This ammunition has a published muzzle velocity of 1210 fps with 780 foot-pounds of energy. definitely is
Due to the ammunition supply, I was only able to fire four groups of 5 rounds. The group average was 1.85 inches. For me this is a pretty good result and I bet with practice I can surely do even better. One thing I can say for sure is that the Hogue grips are a great addition to this big snake when firing full house .44 Magnum rounds. I have shot similar loads in other revolvers with all types of grips and have found these Hogue grips to be comfortable to hold and very effective at reducing felt recoil.
If the original configuration of this revolver is not to your liking, you can customize it in a number of ways. One thing I did was order a set of little presentation grips from Pachmayr, which are like a blast of late '80s/early '90s nostalgia. They were the grip style of my original Anaconda and while the Hogs are probably better in most cases, I like the Pacmyers for sentimental reasons.
Sikkerhetsplugg Colt Anaconda
Another custom touch I plan to add is a scope base. Although I won't be using the revolver for hunting, I'd like to see what the Anaconda can do with an optic mounted on it.
After all the shots I've taken with the new Colt Anaconda, all I can say is that I really like it. It brought me back to the early 90s, when anacondas roamed freely at shooting ranges all over the United States. I found this new model, with its modern features, to be a vast improvement over the '90s classic. Colt Anaconda is certainly a good choice for these tasks and more.

Originally released, the Anaconda suffered from poor accuracy, but barrel changes quickly corrected the problems, allowing Colt to introduce its new pistol as the most accurate .44 Magnum revolver in production.
