I've been reviewing a lot of 9mm pistols lately and last month I posted my best 9mm pistols in 5 categories here. But some have asked how my recommended and reliable 9mm pistols are under $300. who is reliable and does the personal protection work. So, I've researched, shot, and tested a few essential "link-free" pistols and compiled a list of the best 9mm pistols under $300. They don't hurt the wallet and offer essential features with enough firepower for self-defense. There are a few 9mms for under $300, but considering my 10 criteria, I would only like to recommend it to those who have absolutely no doubts about accuracy, reliability, and value for money. Remember, I'm looking at the VALUE pistol that can be had for under $300 after shopping. I listened to what other teachers told me, what I learned as a result of my research, and the comments of soldiers and law enforcement officers that I respect. However, my budget list is of course very subjective and your list will also be biased by your experiences, subjective opinions and criteria. One of my finalists was the Ruger Security-9, and here is my review and field test.

Ruger's Security-9 pistol uses the same reliable "Safe Action" system as Ruger's successful LCP II, with its sharp, short, smooth trigger. The Ruger Security-9 system uses an internal concealed hammer instead of a striker-operated bar, which makes it easy to remove the slide. This is a double-action-only, hammer-triggered preset action. For safety, the Ruger Security-9 features a trigger guard, a manual thumb safety, and a (recessed) hammer latch that prevents the pistol from firing when the trigger is not pulled. It has a Browning type tilting barrel lock. This solidly built pistol has features typically found in much more expensive pistols and doesn't feel "cheap". The hammer, like the striker of percussion weapons, is partially pushed back as the bolt moves backwards. Pulling the trigger ends the hammer strike cycle to fire the pistol. This makes it feel like a single-action trigger with a short and sharp reset point, while still being a double-action pistol.

Thanks to Ruger for loaning me this pistol for testing and evaluation purposes. Please know that I am not on their payroll, they were not paid for this article, or they were not impressed to say certain things about the gun. I want to be honest and forthright about my ideas and opinions, as I see a weapon for sincerely helping people. Specifically, I wanted to know how accurate it was right out of the box without any modifications. How hard was it to pull the trigger? Is the trigger smooth and clear? What about the reset distance for follow-up shots? Is it safe? What are the pros, cons and special features? Are there any issues or concerns preventing me from carrying this gun? What would I change about this weapon? Is this a weapon I would recommend for concealed carry and home defense?

I used quality Sig Sauer Elite V-Crown JHP ammo and some 115-grain FMJs in the 115, 124 and 147 to determine how well the pistol turned and handled various loads. And I bought about 50-60 rounds of American Eagle 115-grain FMJ cartridges. I only fired a total of 200 rounds to evaluate this gun to determine if it is a solid and valuable gun for concealed carry. I wanted to determine if it could do the job at 10 yards as a budget gun without all the "bells and whistles". After taking the photo, I got the information I needed. Below are my ratings for each of the ten safety-9 criteria for my concealed carry purposes. I specifically wanted to test its reliability and accuracy. I thoroughly inspected the gun and thoroughly checked it for misfire, stalling and performance with the JHP ammo and FMJ cartridges. I want to thank Sig Sauer for providing 150 rounds of different Elite Performance ammo to test and evaluate the Security-9.

The 9mm Ruger Security-9 has excellent ergonomics. The thin handle felt good in the hands of me, my wife, and two other instructors. It was comfortable and featured a low bore axle to help reduce felt recoil and prevent muzzle flip. I was able to grip the pistol well and control it with the right grip texture. My pinky didn't hang from underneath when I held the 15-pack - my pinky didn't. The ergonomics of this gun were very good for a handgun at a good price. And the two 15. metal clips that came with it gave me extra bullets and peace of mind. The handles and rounded corners were perfect for me and fit perfectly. I can easily reach all controls. The slide sewed effortlessly for my wife and I, and felt recoil and muzzle rise were very controllable. My wife also liked its ergonomics and shooting.

One thing I didn't like was how small and strict the guide was
